"Spark-ling" an Idea... Level 6...

Ok, here comes ASSIGNMENT 2!!

I had a lot problems trying to work this piece of Assignment out.. like a lot...

At first, I thought there were 2 parts to the assignment. So I actually completed the "Classical Guitar" abstraction thinking I was halfway through, then I realised I misunderstood the lecturer. I was supposed to take a picture and "abstract" it into a "sign" to be placed somewhere in the campus.

As I worked through the 2nd part of the assignment (Assignment 2) yesterday night, I made yet another blunder. I overwrote the trace of the photograph by accident and that was 2 hrs of hard work *flushed* down the drain. Nonetheless, after re-tracing the photograph, I was excited all over again and worked through the various levels of abstraction.

And... here it is...

Rough Sketch for what I "Love"

I have selected the 2nd piece of work from my thumbnail sketches and modified to become what it is above. For the first one, it retained most of the elements from the thumbnail sketches (i.e. the character, the way the characters move). However, I felt it does not really represent me and decided to create a character which looks more like me (i.e. the bespectacled version). As I have mentioned in my previous post, the problem with this piece was [Clarity] of message. Although it does communicate that I love staying cheerful and happy, more so after the addition of cheerful colours, my classmates were unable to tell the alphabets at first glance. During the design process, I've added in "hair" for the character to better exaggerated the characters but it didn't help much. I will be working on it further for my prototype!

Rough Sketch for what I "Hate"

The idea for these 2 designs sparked from the 2nd and 3rd designs in my thumbnail sketches. In my thumbnail sketch, I realised the designs were very "gentle" and thus the design faced some form of [Graphical dissonance]. My classmates mentioned that it did not communicate any form of hatred in it. (Time to splash some blood and add some gore into it... Haha!) The deisgns above are a combination of the 2nd and 3rd designs. I personally like the fact that no colours are used as this can effectively bring across a kind of "dead" and "morbid" feel to the fonts.

Note:

My font designs for "LOVE" are all on the left...
The top left most is the first "LOVE" design and it goes vertically down until the 4th design on the bottom left.

During the small group discussions, my group members preferred the 2nd design on the left. There was [Integration between the Alphabets and the Graphic] unlike the 3rd design on the left where the font used was part of the graphs without any integration. However, the 2nd design was lacking in [Clarity] as it was difficult for the audience to make out my name.

The last design on the bottom left was lacking in [Clarity] as the focus was on the graphic instead of the font for my name. The message for the second design was clear, however, it "suffered" from the problem of [Differentiation or Graphical Dissonance].

As for the "HATE" designs, my group members actually preferred the last design which shows a hand about to raise his middle finger and the fonts were presented on the palm using palm lines. However, there was no [Integration between the Alphabets and the Graphic]. Although symbols were used to portray vulgarities, it was written very neatly and it did not bring across any anger or hate visually.

In conclusion,
[Inferior Graphics] was not too much of an issue for my sketches. The main area I need to work on will probably be on the [Clarity] of my message.
